West Virginia Money Smart Week 2012

April 21 - 28, 2012

Kicking off the third annual Money Smart Week (MSW), sponsors, honored guests and keynote speakers attended a breakfast held at the Clay Center in Charleston where the Money Smart Week Essay Contest Winners received their awards.

Speakers included: Deborah Linz (Emcee), WCHS; AARP State Director Gaylene Miller, Attorney General Darrell McGraw, MSW Chairman Scott Adkins, State Treasurer John Perdue, and State Governor Earl Ray Tomblin (Keynote Speaker).

Following the breakfast, MetroNews Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval broadcasted live from the Clay Center. The two hour-long show was filled with financial discussions on topics such as controlling debt, women and finances, and military family money scams. The WVBA's Education Director Donna Atkinson, and City National Bank VP Operations Program Director Clara Mullins, joined Kercheval for the broadcast to speak about West Virginia's participation in the 2012 Teach Children to Save Day.

Between Monday and Friday, dozens of organizations and agencies worked with AARP to offer a series of free classes and activities for all ages, statewide, on how to better manage personal finances.

The rest of the week included a fraud prevention event in Martinsburg, a consumer protection seminar for military families and veterans in Charleston, free continuing legal education workshops for attorneys and a money conference specifically aimed at women.
